Many people do not know why Radio 254 was born or why it exists. For the longest time, upcoming Kenyan artists would release music online, and it would just exist online. Mainstream media was a very harsh critic of Kenyan music, often overlooking or demeaning Kenyan artists. Many would remember the SoundCloud era of Kenyan music, where SoundCloud was the one place you could go to discover amazing Kenyan music that was not available anywhere else. Before the SoundCloud era, there was reverbnation, where many Kenyan artists began their journey. The dream of any artist is to become mainstream, and SoundCloud became the training ground for many artists to show and grow their skills. On Soundcloud, it was easier to stand out than on Youtube, which required you to have a huge following to get discovered. As more Kenyans put their music on SoundCloud, a few artists would transition from SoundCloud to mainstream, but still very few, which meant that the mainstream continued to have the same familiar faces that we have today that have been there for 20 years.
Soundcloud gave birth to many Kenyan artists and allowed Kenyan artists to express themselves and create different kinds of Kenyan music that was not mainstream but still loved by Kenyans even though it did not sound Kenyan. Though SoundCloud is great for experimenting and sharing music, artists do not make money from people listening to their music on SoundCloud. So as much as it was growing the culture, nobody was making money. Things, however, got better when DSPs came along and allowed anyone to put their music on streaming and monetize it. Now that Kenyan artists could monetize their music and have it available on the platforms where people listen to music globally, a new problem arose. The problem then became, how do Kenyan artists market their music and get more people to go stream their music on streaming platforms? Before TikTok, this was and remains a big challenge for all, if not most, Kenyan artists today.
This is where Radio 254 steps in. Radio 254 is an online platform and nonprofit whose mission is to promote and showcase Kenyan music to the world via the internet. Seeing the challenge that Kenyan artists have with promoting music online, we at Radio 254 aim to help market to the world the diversity of Kenyan music and content that exists. Having observed the last twenty years of Kenyan music and how it has evolved, we want to help make a better and more inclusive Kenyan music industry for all. We know that Kenyan music is great and simply needs to be packaged and marketed online to allow more people to discover it. Realizing the power that the internet has, we chose to focus on the internet as the way which we would be able to get the most people to listen to Kenyan music because the internet is available globally, unlike a radio frequency.
We at Radio 254 know the struggles that Kenyan artists go through every day, not because we read about it or talk to artists but because we ourselves are Kenyan artists and know the struggle it is to get your music played on the radio or even get the chance to record a music video. It is hard out here for Kenyan artists, and we just want to make it better and leave the Kenyan music industry better than it was when we came in. We know that artists like Nyashinski, Wakadinali, and Bien do not need Radio 254 to help them promote their music as they have built their brands and audience over time, but know there are still thousands of artists out there who are starting and looking for an opportunity to have their music played on radio or promoted. Sometimes, all you need is for someone to believe in you or let you know you are on the right track so that you can keep going. That’s what we are here to do for those who need us. Unfortunately, we might not be able to meet everyone’s expectations of us or be able to promote every single Kenyan artist, but with each day, we shall continue trying. It might not be your time today, but your time shall eventually come. For us at Radio 254, we are reminded every day that Radio 254 is bigger than any one individual or artist. We strive to be a Home for Kenyan Music and content where everyone is equal and welcome.
