Something that I have wondered for a long time is why the double standards when it comes to leaked images of men Vs leaked images of women. I would like to start off by saying what people choose to do in their bedrooms is there business until or unless they decide to involve or invite others into their bedroom affairs.
I was wondering the other day why there is double standards when it comes to the topic of leaked images online. As a society, we are all aware that people in relationships sometimes choose to share private pictures with their partner or record videos of themselves making love. There is no crime in doing either of these things. A crime is however committed when someone either in the relationship or an outsider of that relationship decides to share those private pictures or videos.
When these images or videos are shared online as has become a trend in history, the outcome is different for women than it is for men. In a lot of cases, women are shamed while men are praised when their private images are leaked.
Despite the fact that men are often praised rather than ridiculed when their private images are leaked, it does not take away from the fact that the man’s privacy has been violated. Despite this violation of privacy there is little recourse that can be taken once one’s images are leaked online.
Some examples of male Kenyan celebrities that have had their images leaked are artist Boutross & Politician Mukhisa Kituyi. The two despite having their private images leaked could not do much once the images were leaked.
We as internet users spend countless hours online everyday consuming different pieces of information. How do you think cases of leaked images should be handled? Is it fair how things are? What should the law say? What remedy can be given to those affected. As it stands today, people are exposed and nothing happens to those that leak their images or videos.
Do you agree that there are double standards to when women and men’s nudes are leaked? Who should do something about it?
