Millions of Kenyans Decry High Cost of Living

The fuel prices last week, rose to a record high of 159.12 bob for super and sh.140 for diesel marking the fourth consecutive increment since February.

This is the highest cost of super and diesel historically since Kenya started setting pump prices.

Well if you thought you already are using too much money on cab fare, buckle up! Uber fare prices are set to go up in the next two weeks. This according to Uber head of East Africa Imran Manji who said that the company is working on a price review to factor in the recent fuel rise.

 This is in order to calm its army of restless drivers who are demanding compensation due to the high cost of fuel.

Digital taxi drivers have of recent taken to social media to protest the high cost of fuel that’s eating into their earnings.

Kenya’s economy is diesel driven meaning that manufacturers, farmers and service providers will pass the increased fuel cost to consumers, which will further hit households and business.

The most affected are major food staples which have seen a recent 3.3% rise since the previous month.

The sudden rise in the cost of living is largely attributed to the increased weakening of the shilling against the dollar, despite billions being sunk into the stabilization fund.

Kenyans are questioning whether the high cost of living is something unique to Kenya or something that is being experience across the globe as economies try to recover from the effects of the pandemic.

Millions of Kenyans are unsure how they will afford even the most basic of needs as cost of living increases but income remains the same.
