The Green Company

In 2023, a new entrant entered the online radio industry in Kenya. Since 2020, we have not only operated as the leading online radio station in Kenya but conducted extensive research to better understand the online radio landscape in Kenya and who its key players are. We first became aware of the green company’s entry in late 2022 from social media posts on Instagram by Dan Aceda. The green company did not open an Instagram profile for its radio station but instead used its existing platforms to promote the radio station. The entry of the green company signaled two things for Radio 254, one was much-needed competition and the second was the lack of advertising that the station would lose as the green company was now unlikely to advertise on Radio 254 as they have their platform.

As Radio 254, we welcome the entry of the green company into the online radio industry which we hope to continue building and be a part of for a very long time. Having not listened to the station, we cannot comment on the programming only the social media branding that we have seen from presenters on their platform. The online radio industry is unique and one must continue to be innovative. At the end of the day, we are all competing for the attention of users who have a plethora of applications and platforms to choose to spend their time on.

If you look at the green company’s radio station website, it is very similar to ours. If you look at the green company’s radio station branding it almost mimics exactly what we have been saying and echoing for the last three years. How do you compete with someone who has more money than you? Is having the right intentions and doing it first good enough? Time will tell. We support any initiative that seeks to improve and grow the Kenyan music industry not the bottom line of a company. In 2024, we plan on distancing ourselves from the green company as we plan to pivot to our next venture. We however must be careful about what we share and having everything trademarked, copyrighted and patented so as to ensure we are prepared for future legal situations with the green company over what they have taken from Radio 254 and what they plan on trying to take.
